Data Center Moratorium Vote in Greensboro

At the Tuesday, July 21st Greensboro City Council meeting, a motion to impose a moratorium on new data center construction failed with a close 5-4 vote. Piedmont Triad DSA condemns those who voted against the data center moratorium—Councilmembers Adam Marshall, Tammi Thurm, Hugh Holston, Mayor pro tem Denise Roth, and Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter.

A moratorium would have been a good first step toward limiting the damage that data centers can cause to local communities. Large AI data centers use up immense amounts of electricity and water, straining local power grids and ultimately leading to higher utility costs for working people. This vote shows a lack of long-term planning on the part of the Greensboro City Council, and Piedmont Triad DSA will remember this vote in the next municipal elections.
